Walls of Hope

"Walls of Hope" is a WMW portable exhibit documenting WMW over the years, which will be displayed at all public education events. To showcase our work, walls will be painted by community youth with whom WMW has worked, depicting their vision of a peaceful community and family based on peaceful gender relations inspired by WMW’s work.

Gender Fever 2009

Women’s Media Watch 21st Anniversary Celebration

2008 marks the 21st anniversary of Women’s Media Watch Jamaica. We have grown from an informal grouping to one of the leading women’s organizations in Jamaica. In view of the escalating levels of violence in Jamaica, WMW wishes, in this 21st year, to highlight its efforts to uncover the origins of gender-based violence, as well as media violence, and the impact of this violence on women, men and children.

Reducing Gender Based Violence in Jamaica

The violence faced by women and girls because of their gender is called gender-based violence. It is so destructive of the lives of women and their families that it seriously constrains women's ability to contribute effectively to social and economic development.

Violence against women is a violation of women's human rights. It is high on the list of offences and persists in all its forms in Jamaica - rape, incest, carnal abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, forced prostitution and human trafficking. Violence against women is a major impediment to achieving gender equality.

Forging Partnerships with Men to Address Gender-based Violence

  • How is Caribbean masculinity determined?
  • How do male youth respond to the pressure that a ‘real man’ must be tough, in control, successful—with infinite sexual prowess?
  • What is the role of the media in shaping gender values?
  • How do traditional “macho” ideals harm men, as well as women, through man-on-man violence?

These critical questions were the focus of WMW’s course for Male Leaders. Trainees delved deep into the challenges facing men in today’s Jamaica. They explored the power dynamics under-pinning gender relations, and men’s experience of power and powerlessness.

The course encouraged fresh, innovative and critical thinking—and for many the experience was eye-opening and empowering.

Trainees make use of their new gender knowledge in outreach activities where they are guided by experienced Trainers.
