YOU CAN make a contribution of any kind to WMW.Your time, your energy, your skills in areas ranging from writing and reading, to acting, driving, facilitating, researching - all kinds of talents can assist WMW! Women and men are both welcome to volunteer! YOU CAN join WMW. Membership is open to women and girls. Men can contribute their skills and collaborate with us. BE MINDFUL of images on TV, radio, the internet or in magazines and newspapers, which degrade women, men or children by portraying them as sexual objects or victims. BE MINDFUL of children’s cartoons, video games and TV shows which stereotype women as sex objects or victims, and men as aggressive or violent. BE MINDFUL of violent and abusive language in popular music, videos and movies, especially when it links sex with violence. CHALLENGE news media that rely on sex and violence to sell their product. CHALLENGE the news that fails to include the concerns and perspectives of women and children. TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN ... about what they see and hear in the media. You can't prevent them from being affected by the mass media but you can teach them ways to be critical of the messages they are receiving. YOU CAN demand a realistic and positive portrayal of women, men and children by the media. YOU CAN take action yourself by contacting the media - write letters, phone in to call-in programmes. YOU CAN talk about gender-based violence with your community, church or professional group. YOU CAN INVITE WMW to conduct a training workshop or discussion with your group. ASPIRING MEMBER Aspiring members are required to participate in activities, and attend meetings (including Annual General Meeting - having no voting rights) until they fulfill the criteria outlined under FULL MEMBER. FULL MEMBER To qualify for full membership, you must: attend three (3) Members’ meetings and participate in at least three (3) WMW outreach activities or events within a six-month period. To maintain Full Membership, you must: attend three (3) Members’ meetings in a given year, one of which may be the Annual Planning Retreat, plus the Annual General Meeting (AGM), and participate in at least three (3) WMW outreach activities during the year. ASSOCIATE Associate members may attend the Annual Planning Retreat and/or the Annual General Meeting (having no voting rights) and any other WMW activities as desired.
