Notice of Apology

Women’s Media Watch publicly apologises to Advertising & Marketing (Ja.) Limited and J. Wray & Nephew for the misleading and inaccurate statements ascribed as coming from the advertisers and manufacturers, in the article at page 3 of its Newsletter for January – June 2010 in relation to the advertisement of the drink ‘Jagra’ in Jamaica.

Women’s Media Watch acknowledges that Advertising & Marketing (Ja.) Limited and J. Wray & Nephew did not use profanity or other socially unacceptable terminology or verbiage in their advertisements and formally apologies for any embarrassment or damage sustained as a result of its publication.

To celebrate the 21st Anniversary of Women's Media Watch-Jamaica there has been a year of exciting activities which have kept the organization in the news. WMW and CPTC joined forces to mount a forum on Youth, Popular Media and Violence against Women which was broadcast on television.

At WMW's Tribute to Trailblazers which launched WMW's Anniversary celebrations, fourteen (14) women were honoured - women who have been pioneers and gender-advocates in their field of expertise. (See WMW Newsmagazine Volume 5 #2).

A National Consultation, 'Sexual Harassment (W)Rap Up',  was hosted jointly by Women's Media Watch and the Bureau of Women's Affairs. Participants came all the way from Westmoreland at one end of the island, to St.Thomas in the east, to share in the findings of the participatory research and training programme around sexual harassment carried out by WMW and the BWA. Persons from every sector in Jamaica were there - Hairdressers and Cosmetologists, Artistes, Farmers, Fire Fighters and Teachers, Personnel Managers, Youth Leaders, Lawyers and Business women. Ministers of Government in attendance made the commitment to ensure that legislation around Sexual Harassment would be implemented in the very near future.

The year of celebration continued with a Peace March, with Gender Fever 2009 (a creative edu-tainment event) with Workshops, Teach-ins, a Regional Seminar for Caribbean Journalists on gender-aware coverage of violence, an innovative Research project exploring the representation of women and men in the news - part of the Global Media Monitoring Project , "Who Makes the News?" - and much, much more . The Anniversary activities continue into 2010 when WMW will celebrate with a Concert.
